Safety information for carriage ride guests
What to expect when boarding an open-air horse-drawn carriage in a working city park.
A Central Park carriage ride is an outdoor activity involving a horse, an open vehicle, and city park drives. Listen to your coachman when boarding and riding. Keep hands and belongings inside the carriage, seat children securely, and dress for weather. Rides may be rescheduled in severe conditions. This page does not promise that incidents cannot occur.
Boarding and seating
Wait for the coachman to say it is safe to step up. Use provided steps or handholds. Do not walk behind the horse. Once seated, remain seated while the carriage is moving unless the coachman directs a planned photo stop.
Children
Adults are responsible for children in their party. Occupancy follows the booking rules for adults and children 12 and under. If a child needs closer supervision, sit accordingly rather than spreading across the carriage.
Weather
Light rain usually does not cancel a ride; carriages have covers. Lightning, heavy storms, or other unsafe conditions lead to a reschedule or refund as described in the weather policy. The coachman may also pause if park conditions require it.
Accessibility
Historic carriages are not equivalent to an accessible transit vehicle. If anyone in your party has limited mobility, contact the team before booking so they can describe boarding realistically for that carriage. Do not assume a lift or wheelchair space is available.
